WHY IS SAFE SPORT IMPORTANT?

We all deserve to participate in sport environments that are accessible, inclusive, safe, and free from all forms of Maltreatment by others. To reach this goal, sport organizations must ensure safe sport environments and every participant plays a role.

CLUB COMMITMENT

The Juan de Fuca Lawn Bowls Club is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where people want to stay and belong. The club’s ability to attract and retain members is integral to the success of the club. The Juan de Fuca LBC fully endorses the Bowls Canada Boulingrin (BCB) Safe Sport Belonging in Bowls (BiB) strategy as a fundamental path to achieving this goal. THE CLUB SAFETY OFFICER

Role:

The Club Safety Officer role is to provide for a safe, respectful, and inclusive lawn bowling environment.

The Club Safety Officer will champion the Safe Sport Belonging in Bowls program by engaging with all members.

Responsibly:

  • Develop standard communication processes to interact with all members.
  • Provide for a safe facility and playing environment.
  • Implement policies and Safe Sport initiatives that keep participants safe.
  • Develop and promote a Club Code of Conduct.
  • Respond to all safety incidents and resolve conflict.
  • Provide safety related training opportunities.
  • Ensure First Aid Kits and AED equipment are available.
  • Implement COVID-19 Return to Play guidelines, if applicable.

SAFETY

Return to Sport Guidelines during COVID

Our Club follows the BC Public Health Officers (PHO) and viaSport guidelines during COVID. Current guidelines are reported below and are subject to change. Club policy will be amended should changes be announced by either of these organizations. 

viaSport is working with the Province of British Columbia and the amateur sport sector to support organizations to operate safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Current guidance from the Office of the Public Health Officer

  • All sport activities are allowed.
  • Proof of vaccination is no longer required for sport activities and programs.
  • Wearing masks in public indoor settings is not required by public health. Wearing a mask is a personal choice.

Club Safety Protocol

These safety Protocols always remain in effect for attending the premises.

  • Stay home if you are sick.
  • Cover if you need to cough or sneeze.
  • Maintain good hand hygiene, sanitizer bottles are available for your use.
  • Wearing a Mask in the Clubhouse and the Locker Room is now optional.
  • Adhere to 1 person limit in the equipment shed.

  • Automatic Emergency Defibrillator (AED)
    • Clubhouse by office

    • Washrooms

IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY

Charge Person Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct an initial assessment of the injury.
  2. Wait with the injured participant and help keep them calm until emergency medical services arrive and conduct their assessment of the injury.
  3. Record the injury using their club’s accident report form.

Call Person Responsibilities:

  1. Call for emergency help.
  2. Provide all necessary information to dispatch.
    • The facility location
    • The closest access to the injured participant
    • The nature of the injury
    • A description of first aid that has been performed
    • Other medical information, such as allergies or medical conditions
    • Clear any traffic from the facility entrance or access road before the ambulance arrives.
  3. Wait by the entrance to direct the ambulance.
  4. Call the participant’s emergency contact person.
  5. Assist the charge person as needed.

All Executive, Board of Management and Coaches are required to take Safe Sport related training to ensure understanding of these principles and to better  provide a safe bowling environment.
